The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the consequences of Russias food embargo on the EU, USA, Canada, Australia and Norway from 2014 is depicted in the government owned newpaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta. This is done by means of a qualitative textual analysis according to professors Lennart Hellspong and Per Ledin, complemented by Russian linguistic research. The analysis is executed with a focus on verbal processes and expressions of attitudes. Framing theory, or frame analysis, serves as the main theoretical framework. Anna Arutunyan’s The Media in Russia serves as a complementary base for the analysis.
The study finds that the consequences of the embargo are depicted as essentially positive for the Russian people and food producers, while the consequences for EU and others are depicted in mainly negative terms. This is done partly by means of selectively describing certain processes as either active or passive constructions. The presence of utterances expressing nationalistic values has also proven significant for the conveyed message, as well as certain expressions of modality.
