In this essay I have analysed the documentary film Crimea - The Way Home. The film is produced and distributed by the Russian state-owned media. My aim is to analyse how the film portrays the different actors in the conflict, how the events that transpired are described and which strategies for legitimization are used. My main goal is to examine the way in which the movie portrays the events that transpired and the various actors involved and analyse the forms of identity formation present in the film. Additionally I attempt to determine if the film exhibits any particular bias in favour of the Russian Federation’s actions on Crimea and if so, how biased is it and can the film in fact be considered propagandistic. I utilised a critical discourse analysis to examine the film and to answer the questions I posed I also presented a theoretical framework that defines propaganda. In my analysis I found that the film was indeed biased and makes frequent use of othering in the depiction of the opposing side of the conflict. I therefore argue that the biased messaging is enough to conclude that the film is to be considered propaganda.
