Essential to many films is the conflict between good and evil. This paper presents an overview of the representation of evil in film. The paper’s purpose is to find out how the three principal antagonists in four Robin Hood movies are represented as being evil and how this has changed over time. The study method used is semiotic analysis. The previous research in the field of evil representation in film is limited, and a semiotic analysis of evil in Robin Hood movies is, to the best of the author’s knowledge, nonexistent. The findings indicate that the supposed evil characters are represented as misogynistic, anti-Christian, unholy, sadistic, violent, murderous and uncompromising persons. The representation has shifted over time to being less focused on iconography and religious themes. Instead the evil characters tended to be visually more abnormal and deformed in the two modern films. In conclusion, the representation of evil in old and new Robin Hood films share many common motifs. However, evil in modern film is more simplified and more explicit.
