Summary, in English

The purpose of this degree essay is to explore the processes of subjectification and objectification of four different female characters as consequences of contact with an ominous element. Some of the characters experience the ominous from an outside perspective and others through the character itself personifying the ominous element. The exploration begins with two stories by Emilia Pardo Bazán, “Vampire” and “The Rearisen” from the turn of the 19th century, and continues with two stories by Mariana Enriquez, “End of Term” and “Where Are You, Dear Heart?” from the beginning of the 21st century. The analysis is made with the help of the theories of the uncanny by Sigmund Freud and Simone de Beauvoir’s theories of gender and subjectivity, and the results show that the female characters who are turned into objects are objectified in both a literal and ambiguous way, all due to their contact with an ominous element. The female characters who are subjectified experience their process simultaneously with their transformation into the ominous element of the story, due to the specific circumstances at play that force them to transition, but at the same time empower them to become subjects with agency.
